Speaking of Star Wars…

I’m putting this up for my benefit as much as yours. Justin Van Genderen has made these gorgeous travel posters for Star Wars planets and is navigating copyright issues to see if he can print them. Simple, subtle and yet totally recognizable, these posters are incredibly appealing.

Maybe if Sith Lucas puts the kabosh on them, Justin can offer higher resolution images that people can print out themselves? Until this resolves, this stands as a reminder to keep an eye out!

You’re my only hope…

Built in 2009 for Star Wars Days at Legoland California, this Star Wars: A New Hope Lego Chess set took two months to make. Not only are the standard characters brilliantly posed (please note Luck and Leia recreating the movie poster), but there are some great movie moments picked out and featured. The Dark Side’s rook is none other than Greedo waiting to shoot first. Close up shots can be found here,

Okay, now we can be friends again

iron-man-and-cap

I love this painting by Daniel Clarke. It absolutely captures the vindication I think a lot of readers would like to see in the post-Civil War era. A one-hit smack down of epic proportions. Glorious :)

Thundercats… PLUSH!!!

I may not understand Furries, but I do understand my generations attraction to the cat people of Thundercats. Colorful, stylish and mostly not lame (I’m looking at you Tigra), the Thundercats are graphic, appealing action stars.

Chelsea Rae of LoveandSandwich has captured this allure perfectly in her Lion-O plush toy. She has done such a fantastic job! I love the detail in the eyes and his gorgeous mane of hair! I would like to see the claw shield added in later versions, but the sword with the Eye of Thundara is pretty great!

I hope this is the beginning of a whole series! Check out Chelsea’s Etsy store for other great plush projects as well (The Nippled Yetis are adorable!).

You *can* go home again!

I started collecting Uncanny X-Men in 1988 and quickly became obsessed , gobbling up all the back issues I could find. I ate up Storm’s struggle to deal with the loss of her powers, Kitty’s painful desire to fit in, Rachel Summers’ dark secrets and Wolvie, Nightcrawler and Collossus’s three way bromance. Seriously, a golden era.

So when I found Iron-Cow Production’s custom X-Men 1986 figures, I was instantly enamored. Not only do the figures look GREAT, but they’ve also included amazing backdrops like Rachel’s phoenix force manifestation and Nightcrawler’s *BAMF*! Love love love! I wish Marvel would mass produce these!

Rachel Summers, Phoenix II

Ororo Munroe, Storm

Kitty Pryde, Shadowcat (in her Morlock/Storm inspired costume)

Kurt Wagner, Nightcrawler

Evil *is* impressive

This might not look too impressive, until I tell you that it is made of sand, and that a fully grown man squatting on Satan’s shoulder would only come up to the top of it’s head.

This take on Satan was created by Ray Villafane for the 2009 Dante’s Inferno themed Sand Sculpture Festival in Jesolo (Venice) Italy. Besides this monstrosity, Ray has done sculpting work for Sideshow Collectibles, DC Direct, McFarlane Toys, and Bowen Designs. He is also the creator of this well known Predator pumpkin.

To understand the magnitude and detail of this amazing work, please click here to see some detailed photos of the process.

Selina’s gone to the dogs…

Adam Hughes will do anything for charity. Or at least he’ll turn Selina Kyle into Old English Sheepdog Woman to support the Old English Sheepdog Rescue Network of the South East. Inspired by his own two sheepdogs, Adam Hughes offered this 20″ X 14″ piece up for auction raising $2,551.00! For a closer look, go to Adam Hughes’ Deviant Art page.

ps. Yewoch, AH! Tell us how you really feel about Selina’s baby!

All must bow before SPARKLELORD

… I don’t even know what to say about this…

From the genius world of Dr. McNinja comes the maligned hater of all things radical, Sparklelord! The Sparklelord is also a fancy motorcycle. And might be a good guy since the King of Radical is Dr. McNinja’s nemesis.

It’s all a bit confusing - why don’t you go read it for yourself. And then go buy the totally awesome print of Sparklelord for your bedroom!

When adorable corporate giants collide!

I’m just going to let Jude Buffum, the artist behind these works explain them:

In doing some research I discovered that many of the more feminine and cutesy characters [from the eighties] were originally created by greeting card companies and only later became toys and/or cartoons. For example, Rainbow Brite was created by Hallmark and Strawberry Shortcake was created by American Greetings. I found this amusing that they were essentially greeting card corporate adversaries, so it was only natural to pit them against one another for my piece, “Rainbow Bloodbath”. I also did a second piece, “Care Bear Carnage”, pitting one of the Care Bears (also created by American Greetings) against the popular 80s talking bear toy Teddy Ruxpin.

Both are available for purchase at Jude’s website, along with a lot of other great works. He also has two clever shirts available here!

Lil’ Heartbreakers

We all know that a good superhero story involves a good soap opera (if you haven’t admitted this to yourself before, now’s a good a time as any) and J Salvador has done a heart wrenchingly good job of boiling down 12 comic heroes and villian’s adorable angst in his Super ‘Emo’ Friends series. Due to their viral explosion, reprints might be a ways away due to licensing concerns (the double edged sword of success), but keep your eyes open for more from this geeky artist!

I hope series 2 includes a Iron Man bemoaning “Why does everyone hate me?” or “I didn’t mean to get Captain American killed”. Come to think of it, Iron Man has enough angst to fill Series 2 all by himself!

thanks monkeyhole!

Excalibur… and it’s holster?

ladyofthelake

This one goes out to my Deadlands playin’ peeps. I’ve never seen the Lady of the Lake reimagined and thought this was just completely inspired! I’m thoroughly enjoying trying to decide if this is the beginning or end of the story :)

This is only one of several gorgeous pieces by Winona Nelson. Another favorite is her giraffe-centaur - go check it out!

[EDIT - I couldn't not post it here, but do go check out her other work!]
